Two minor but undoubtedly necessary characters in Michael and Jonah's story, Wendell and Halifax.

Never a terribly smart student, Wendell dropped out of high school early in his senior year to join the army. He became a member of the Canine Unit at Fort Carson (Colorado Springs, CO) and was assigned a labrador/shepard mix named Halifax.

A year later, he was enlisted for deployment and moved to Fort Irwin in California to travel with the other troops heading to Afghanistan. There he met Michael, a 20 year-old soldier who'd already been in the army for 2 years. They became close friends and served on-and-off together for nine years, until, when on patrol one day with Halifax, Michael, and a few others, Wendell was shot by an undetected sniper. Halifax was killed shortly after, and that was that - the young soldier was no more.
